Iraq’s Parliament requires expulsion of US troops from the nation following drone assault

Iraqi lawmakers authorized a decision Sunday calling to expel U.S. troops from the nation, following an American drone assault that killed Iranian Gen. Qassem Soleimani.

Nearly all of about 180 legislators current in Parliament voted in favor of the decision. It was backed by most Shiite members of parliament, who maintain a majority of seats. Many Sunni and Kurdish legislators didn’t present up for the session, apparently as a result of they oppose abolishing the deal.

However the Iraqi Parliament vote doesn’t suggest that the U.S. navy has to go away the nation instantly. It is a non-binding vote, which is seen as largely symbolic.

The 5,000 U.S. troops are in Iraq on the invitation fo the nation’s government department, the Prime Minister’s officer — not Parliament. It’s as much as the Iraqi Prime Minister whether or not the troops might be expelled.

The vote comes two days after a U.S. drone strike killed Soleimani on the Baghdad airport, ratcheting up tensions within the area and elevating fears of struggle.
